PAPER  SPACE  STANDARDS

First  Chapter

Understanding the concepts involved in using paper space in conjunction with model space is one of the most important skill sets that a typical CADD Operator is called upon to master.

In its most basic terms, 'paper space' is about the ultimate limitations of using 'paper' as the finish product.

Paper space is also a reminder that paper comes from trees, that wasting paper is bad for the environment and that no matter what a project budget may allow - someone always ends up paying for all that plotting.

Actual Scale of Paper Space vs. Relative Scale in Viewports

Next  Chapter

In paper space when the end product is a plot on 24" x 36" paper, the dimensions of the cadd titleblock will be exactly that.  So if a user wishes to maintain 1/8" high text in paper space, then all they have to do is select that size text and that's it - No conversion for scale necessary.  Text sizes in Viewports however, will be relative to scale.  Below is an example of a 'Paper Space' titleblock in both metric and Imperial:

      Metric-Imperial Comparison

Conversely, if the end product will also be a plot on 24" x 36" paper but the titleblock is created in model space, the resulting titleblock will end up measuring 192' x 288' for a 1/8" = 1'-0" drawing.  A titleblock for a drawing at 1/16" = 1'-0" scale will be double that at 384' x 576' - and of course, a target drawing designed for 1/4" = 1'-0" scale will end up measuring half that at 96' x 144' and so on - A complicated system indeed.
