NAMING CONVENTION STANDARDS |
First Chapter |
One of the most common mistakes made in the rush to get a project out is not following proper naming conventions. Computers are great at listing files in alphabetical order - People are great at making a mess.
Listing a group of drawings in the same order as they will appear in a final set can be as simple as adding a zero in front of all the single-digit drawings - so they will list properly. This is not always as obvious as it may appear. ( Sheet 'A-1' becomes 'a01-site-pln.dwg', sheet 'A 2.0' becomes 'A 02.00 flr-pln2.dwg', etc.) Twelve (12) character 'file names' are extremely useful in drawings with X-refs so 'file-paths' can be kept relatively short. Batch plotting print-sets is also a whole lot easier when the number of files in a directory matches the number of drawings in the final set. Any organized file system is better than no system at all. |
